Moved by the mass exodus of refugees arriving on the Greek island of Lesbos, contemporary artist and activist – Ai weiwei unveiled a large installation in Copenhagen last week in hopes to draw more awareness to the crisis as well as challenge our ideology of social justice and human rights. Titled “Soleil Levant” - after Monet’s depiction of the harbor in Le Havre post Franco / Prussian conflicts in 1872 - the Kunsthal Charlottenborg was retro fitted with thousands of life vests along the exterior windows and facades, which were salvaged from the rescue efforts. Coming from a family of first generation immigrants, this work and commentary on the situation hits close to home for me, if you find yourself in the area the installation will be running until the first week of October.
